Caring For Your Emotions While Divorcing a Narcissist

Learn one important practice to stay grounded as you experience the trauma of divorcing a narcissist.

Most of us come onto the battlefield saddled with a great deal of trauma from our marriages.

Then, entering the family court system, intense stressors and traumas can come at us from all angles. As we work toward a strategic mindset, it’s important to establish practices to acknowledge and work through our painful emotions in safe spaces.

When we are not caring for our emotional wellbeing, our emotions tend to show up on the battlefield. OR they come out sideways, affecting our physical health or our ability to authentically connect with our loved ones.

Establishing a practice for emotional self-care can be a true life-saver on the battlefield.

How Can I Care For My Emotions While Divorcing a Narcissist?

Caring for your emotions and giving them space to exist without judgment is essential to your wellbeing on this journey.

And the real beauty is that this practice doesn’t look the same for everyone. Depending on your financial circumstances, emotional capacity, desire to share with others, and other factors, there are many different ways to express difficult emotions in safe spaces, including:

  • Regular sessions with a trauma-informed therapist;

  • Regular participation in a trauma-informed support group (check your local domestic violence advocacy organization for support group locations and dates);

  • “Trauma talks” with a trusted, close friend or family member, who can offer you a truly nonjudgmental space. If your trusted friend or family member isn’t local, video chats, video messaging, audio messages, and even texting can be great options.

  • Journaling - whether pen and paper, “talk” journaling (recording yourself onto your phone while you walk, draw, drive, or rest), or typing.

Certified High Conflict Divorce Coaches provide safe spaces for you to express difficult emotions, and can help you build your support team so that your emotional, mental, physical, and financial needs are met and soothed. Consider finding your coach today
